(2021) on IMDb

In 2010, Samuel Jackson starred in a movie titled the unthinkable. When you hear a film’s title like this, it heightens your expectations of what it could be that is unthinkable. This naming method is the same feeling that most may experience when they hear a movie title like ‘The Unforgivable.’ The Unforgivable brings Sandra Bullock back into the spotlight and allows her to stretch her acting prowess to touch the emotions of the average viewer.

Directed by Nora Fingscheidt, the movie not only gives you a compelling story of a life scenario that could warrant an individual to perform unforgivable acts, but it also provides sustainable interests, twists, and turns that keep the viewer guessing. Fingscheidt is a director mainly associated with German titles; as with Jake Gyllenhaal’s The Guilty, one may not be sure if this is a re-told story for the American audience. This movie, produced by Netflix, Gives the viewer a glimpse of the life of Ruth Slater, Played by Sandra Bullock, and shows us how her life on parol fails to thrive in an unforgiving society that creates less room for ex-convicts.

The movie’s early moments may lead the viewer to think that it’s all about the harshness of society that punishes her for her crime after prison. But it goes beyond that and introduces different characters into the story. Jon Benthal (The Walking Dead) becomes Ruth’s coworker at the first job she can find when she is let out of prison and begins to show a strong interest in Ruth. But now, fresh out of prison, Ruth appears to lack interest in getting into a relationship. But as soon as she can accept his intentions, she is in for a surprise.

Viola Davis plays the part of Liz Ingram, Wife of John Ingram (Vincent D’Onofrio), a lawyer who helps Ruth try to gain access to her estranged sister. Viola Davis does not play a significant role in this movie, but she is present enough to deliver the passion she always brings to her films.

Besides certain flashback scenes, Sandra Bullock is far from looking like she did in Miss Congeniality. She mostly looked like the ex-con she was portrayed as, dirty and unkept, with a constant expression on her face that justifiably depicts the difficulty she is going through. So, if you are one of the viewers that jumped on this movie to see an elegant Sandra Bullock, you may want to go and re-watch Miss congeniality. She even looked a lot better in Bird Box, despite all the trauma she experienced in that movie.

In all, the viewer is in for good drama, a perfect blend of suspense, and a little bit of an emotional ride as characters in this movie experience a situation where they want to forgive or wish to understand the possibility of refraining from revenge. It keeps you interested enough to wait for the outcome, which promises to be satisfying and makes it a well-rounded story.
